CBS’ SEAL Team has added some Pepper to the mix, in the wake of this week’s eventful Season 4 premiere.
Near the end of the two-hour season opener, though Cerberus had been “cleared for duty” after being wounded in the snowy Spin Ghar Mountain Range, it was agreed that his days with Bravo Team were over.
“That dog was bred to be in the fight… but I think he’s suffered way too much stress, combat and trauma,” team leader Jason Hayes (played by David Boreanaz) noted. “I think it’s time for him to just be a dog.”
The same can be said for Cerberus’ portrayer, Dita, a five-year-old Belgian Malinois who, though well-trained, cannot entirely know that the sometimes-explosive drama swirling around her on-screen is make-believe.
“The combat and stress on Dita the actor was such that [handler] Justin Melnick [who also plays Brock] came to us and said, ‘This is really getting to a point where I think she can’t do this anymore,” EP Spencer Hudnut told TVLine. “But these teams always have a dog, so we will be introducing a new dog.”
That new canine is named Pepper (on-screen and off), and the 2 1/2-year-old Dutch Shepherd will make her debut in the Wednesday, Dec. 9 episode.
Named after a special forces dog that died on the Tigres River in Iraq a few years ago, Pepper was born in Hulsburg, Netherlands, and has a training background in single purposes explosive detection. “When she is not on set, Pepper loves snuggling by the fire and swimming in the ocean,” reads her bio.

Thoughout the Series[]
Brock continues to run Cerberus through his training exercises, worried he might be losing his edge and forced to retire. Bravo tracks down a gun for hire that has been jailed. Aware the officers are wasting their time and something is about to happen, they are only partially caught off guard when a suicide bomber blows up the police building. Bravo tries to rescue Clay who is pinned down, and waiting for back-up. [1]
There was only one question throughout the SEAL Team Season 4 premiere
Throughout the SEAL Team Season 4 premiere, we were all mostly concerned about Cerberus. Would he get to retire or suffer a more permanent fate?
Let me say that as much as I trust the writers not to create drama for the sake of drama, I also trust the SEAL Team writers to remain true and realistic. And it’s the latter that has had me worried throughout the summer and fall. More from
We all had a feeling something would happen to Cerberus. The show has been hinting for some time that Cerberus would be taken out of the team, but the worst we feared at first was retirement. Cerberus was off his game, and throughout the SEAL Team Season 4 premiere, he was more skittish than ever before.
I’m intrigued at how the show managed this with Cerberus throughout the episode. We know Justin Melick had been training another dog with Dita the Hair Missile recently but assumed Pepper was a replacement to bring in another dog. Is it possible that we had Pepper on our screens throughout the SEAL Team Season 4 premiere?
Season 4[]
In God of War, the first episode of Season 4, Cerberus is on edge and appears to be scared as the teams are on stakeout. He even runs away as a firefight breaks out. Brock tries to chase after him, but gets blown back by a grenade, which ultimately knocks him out. Cerberus then wanders through the forest and ends up saving Jayson from an attacker who tried to shoot Bravo 1 from behind his back as Jason was busy taking care of other armed hostiles. Jason finds that Cerberus has a deep knife wound and tries his best to take care of the gash. Bravo 1 had previously been separated from the team by a grenade and has to make his way back to the rally-point without most of his gear and limited communications. Jayson carries Cerberus for most of the way as the dog gets too weak to walk. At one point Bravo 1 even leaves Cerb in the snow, kind of as bait, in order to take out some enemies, which had been chasing the pair. They barely make it to the rally point and are saved by Bravo.
