The Grinches Dog Max

If you want to make Benedict Cumberbatch go all mushy, just mention Max, the adorable canine companion to the nasty Grinch.

“It’s those cute puppy eyes. It’s all about the eyes,” says Cumberbatch, who stars as the Christmas-loathing green-skinned creature in the animated film “The Grinch” (out on Blu-ray Feb. 5). “Max is the world’s greatest dog, let alone the Grinchs best companion. Anyone should be so lucky to have a Max in their life.”

Maxs role will be expanded with his own mini-feature on “The Grinch” Blu-ray, which features the pooch selflessly helping his master get over a cold.

“More Max is definitely something people can get excited about. He’s the most lovable character from the movie,” says Scott Mosier, who directed “The Grinch” with Yarrow Cheney.”

Animator Chuck Jones made Max a major player in the beloved 1966 TV special “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” The pooch played a major role in the 2000 live-action movie, alongside Jim Carreys Grinch.

In the box office hit “The Grinch,” Maxs central role is fleshed out even further. He continues to take the brunt of much of Mr. Grinchs bad moods, but he gets more begrudging love from his cranky master.

“If it wasn’t for Max, the Grinch’s heart wouldn’t just be too small. It wouldn’t exist,” says Mosier. “The Grinch does love the dog. He’s just not that open about that love. But you can see there is someone in there.”

Maybe its just that Max is a good dog. But in the film and his own feature, Max shows that there must be some good in the Grinch under all those crusty layers.

“Max sees something the audience is not seeing. He knows this guy,” says Mosier. “It’s that unconditional love that makes Max so appealing.”

Max is the dog and companion of The Grinch, debuting as the secondary antagonist in the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Max is also a prominent character in the television special, the film adaptation, and the musical adaptation (See The CGI Version of Max). He acts as The Grinchs reindeer in the book and its adaptations.

In the television special, Max has slightly changed in appearance, mainly in his face. He was voiced by Dallas McKennon, then voiced by Henry Gibson and now Frank Welker (narrator of “Maxs Playhouse” DVD segment “The Care and Feeding of a Grinch”). His only two speaking lines are “Yipe!” and “Raaaahhh!” performed by Dallas McKennon, while being hit by the Grinchs whip. He has brown curved ears and tan fur.

Written in 2018 by Astrid Holm, I Am Max is the story of How the Grinch Stole Christmas but from the point of view of Max himself. And if you couldn’t tell, this is a Dr. Seuss style book, but obviously not written by the author himself.

Over on Amazon, the book will cost you about $3.99, although the list price is $7.99, and it truly gives us a new look at the classic story. And if you are anything like us, then you already know that we want as much Max content as we can get.

Are you a fan of Dr. Seuss? Do you enjoy How the Grinch Stole Christmas? Are you a fan of his dog Max? I know we are! But did you know Max his own book?

In fact, we are kind of obsessed with the Grinch’s dog and he is why we love the story so much. Max is proof that dog’s are truly the most loyal companions anyone can ever have.
