Is the Grinch an animal or human?
The Grinch is a fictional, green-colored creature with a cat-like face and a cynical personality. He lives in isolation upon Mt. Crumpet with his dog Max. The Grinch overlooks the city of Whoville with a lack of empathy for all Whos.
Dr. Seuss didnt include such scatological humor in his original story, but somehow it was deemed necessary in this extended version. In a moment that must be seen to be believed, the Grinch releases a large fart (complete with sound effect), waves his hand in front of his nose, and blames Max.
Mount Crumpit He resides on the snowy Mount Crumpit, located north of the town of Whoville, home of the warm-hearted Whos. From his cave, the Grinch can hear the noisy Christmas festivities that take place in Whoville.

The Grinch is explicitly stated not to be a Who in the 2000 movie tie-in book How the Grinch got so Grinchy.
This is somewhat contradicted in the film itself, where Cindy-Lou Who uses a quote from the Book of Who that suggests that the Grinch is indeed a Who. In this case, however, she seems to be using the term as a catch-all for people in general.
