That peanut butter sitting in your pantry is probably safe for your dog. The most popular brands of peanut butter, such as Jif, Skippy, Smuckers and Peter Pan are all xylitol-free.

Unopened and stored in a cool, dry area, Jif peanut butter will last about two years (refer to the “Best If Used By” date). After opening, you can keep Jif peanut butter about three months on the pantry shelf. If unopened, Jif To Go Peanut Butter and Jif Natural Peanut Butter Spread will each last one year (refer to the “Best If Used By” date).

What Happens If Dogs Eat Peanut Butter with Xylitol?

A dog’s body reacts differently to xylitol than humans. In fact, xylitol stimulates a dog’s pancreas. In a very short amount of time, your dog will become hypoglycemic from consuming xylitol.

Many owners do not see the signs until it is too late. Soon after consuming anything with xylitol, your dog will become lethargic, lose coordination, and have diarrhea. If they consume a large enough amount, your dog will suffer from seizures and may risk death.

Does Jif Peanut Butter Contain Xylitol?

Jif Peanut Butter does not contain xylitol. Jif has many varieties of peanut butter and all of them are clear of xylitol.

There are four major brands that add xylitol to their peanut butter. The four brands are:

    Is regular Jif safe for dogs?

    JIF. There is no xylitol in any JIF peanut butter products making them safe for your pup. However, they do contain added salt, so they aren’t the best peanut butters for regular snacking. If you’re in a pinch, look for the “JIF Natural” series, which has a reduced amount of sugar and salt added.

    Does Jif have xylitol in it?
