There are some really cheap options you can consider. I recommend Hotfenlee’s Wireless Video Doorbell Camera (available on Amazon.com). It’s a doorbell camera, but what’s really great is that it has a motion detector, so if anyone tries to break in through the door, you’ll have the footage.
If you want to know more about various ways burglars hurt and kill dogs so you can know how to protect your beloved “guardian angel,” continue reading this article. I’ll also mention other, maybe better, ways you can protect your home without a sentry dog.
Dogs are one of the best “weapons” homeowners have at their disposal against dangerous burglars—or at least we think so. In some cases, the lives of dogs might be in serious danger. Do burglars kill or even hurt dogs at all?
It must be a big surprise when they break into a house and are greeted by a pit bull. Often they kill the dog because they don’t know what to do at that moment. The usual weapon of choice is a sharp, silent weapon that won’t wake the homeowner up. In most cases, that’s a knife.
Unfortunately, there are some cases where burglars aren’t particularly interested in keeping a guard dog alive—they simply don’t care if they have to kill the dog to get what they want. And then there are some burglars who’re, well—new to the business, shall we say, so they don’t spend any time checking if you have a dog at all.
Speaking after treating two Pit Bull Terriers who were targeted with an acidic spray in a La Lucia house robbery, Dr Yonela Nkubungu said it is not uncommon for pets to be caught up in robberies.
Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal veterinarian has cautioned pet owners to take steps to prevent their dogs from eating poisoned food left by robbers planning to pounce on their homes.
Nkubungu said that on further inspection, it appeared that the dogs had been sprayed with an acid-like substance that could have been vinegar.
“Dont just fill a bowl and let the dog find the food. Establish a definite link between yourself and the food,” he said. Most Read For Subscribers
One dogs eye had to be treated for conjunctivitis caused by the spray, and both dogs were treated for poisoning as a precaution.
Dog poisonings are becoming more and more prevalent during house break-ins. The Blue Security team wants to make sure that you know how you could save your dog’s life if he or she is poisoned.
“Apart from training your dog not to eat from a stranger or nibble on something they found thrown onto the property, which would defy their natural instincts, poison prevention for your pet is quite grim. This is why we want to equip you with the following information centered around saving your dog’s life should you be able to determine that they ingested poison,” the team said.

Four Yorkshire terriers were poisoned in a Clubview complex on Sunday, apparently by a thief intent on robbing their neighbour.
About 15 minutes later, a thief scaled the walls of the complex and crossed into the neighbours’ home, where he stole a braai, lights, and some linen.
The owners of the dogs, who asked not to be named for safety reasons, said the dogs were all poisoned with Aldicarb.
“Only registered farmers can purchase it. The problem is that the poison gets stolen from farmers, and used to poison dogs. The poison is easily purchased at any taxi rank.”
“The complex has never had any issues with crime. Now, in the past six months, we have seen a serious spike in crime. My neighbour across from me has also been targeted,” they said.
“Just a few nights ago his window was shattered by someone who threw a stone. His devil’s fork was also bent away from the wall, without someone ever breaking in. We fear whoever is breaking in might strike again.”
“The most common way the poison is fed to dogs is by putting it in Vienna sausages. The poison resembles gun powder, and is highly poisonous,” says Levanon.
“All it takes is ingesting less than half a teaspoon of Two-Step and any animal or toddler is more than likely to die a horrible, painful death with the nervous system being affected and death by asphyxiation.”
The family said the dogs all started acting erratic before struggling to walk and falling down. They had difficulty breathing and died shortly afterwards.
Recently, two dogs, a German shepherd and a Yorkshire terrier were poisoned in Kloofsig.
Valhalla also recently fell victim to a spate of dog poisoning, with nine poisoned over a two month period.
