How do ticks get on dogs?

Your dog can get ticks from being outdoors. Ticks carry out what is called ‘questing behaviour’, crawling up low grass or shrubs and lying in wait. When your pet brushes past, the tick takes the opportunity to find a new home. Ticks can lie in wait like this for several months until they find a host.

Ticks can be difficult to see because they are so small, especially when they first attach.

To find ticks, it is recommended to walk your fingers through your dogs coat, feeling the skin surface carefully as you go. Pay particular attention to those hidden or hard to reach areas like under the collar and chin, between the toes, paws, gum-line, lips, eyes and inside the ears. And don’t forget to feel along their body, making sure to check their belly, and then down the back legs and genital region, as ticks can be found there, as well as on the tail.

A tick remover or tick removal tool will help remove a tick. These tools can either be tweezers or a specially shaped ‘hook’ which you buy from your vet or pet supplies store.

To remove the tick, grab the tick adjacent to your pet’s skin (at the tick mouthparts), twist the tick gently, then pull the tick away from the skin.

Take care not to squeeze the tick’s body as you pull it off your dog. Removed ticks may still be alive, so be sure they don’t escape to find another host to feed on.

So how do they do it? Nexgard is manufactured by Merial the same company that make Frontline flea treatment so you know the company can be trusted.

Nexgard contains a new powerful active ingrediant Afoxolaner. Afoxolaner kills fleas and ticks by selectively binding to GABA-gated and glutamate-gated chloride channels in insect and acarine nerve cell membranes. What this means is it attacks the central nervous system of the flea and tick sending them into hyperexcitation which results in uncontrolled activity and death. The nervous systems is different in mammals which has enabled this incredible science to just attack the fleas and ticks and be safe for dogs.

This product has undergone extensive testing for efficacy and for safety. Veterinary clinical trials conducted througth the trials and testing showed no indication of adverse side effects The testing also showed a lack of accumulation after multiple dosing. With the evidence of observed saftey and the sustained effectiveness it was concluded that afoxolaner is a convenient and safe ectoparasiticide to be used for dogs.

Nexgard is a new oral treatment that controls fleas and ticks including paralysis ticks for a full month. It is a tasty beef chew that dogs love. So easy and simple and effective.

Studies have shown that 82% of pet owners are not treating their dogs correctly for paralysis ticks. 59% of these people dont even realise that they are in a tick area. Paralysis ticks are generally found right down the east coast of Australia. If you are not sure a good way to check is to give your local vet clinic a quick call to see how many tick cases they treat. This phone call surpises most pet owners.

NEXGARD FOR TICKS AND FLEAS FOR DOGS REVIEW | HOW TO USE NEXGARD

We live in one of the most highly tick infested areas of the country. Also, this past flea and tick season has been the longest and the worst that our clients have ever seen. Remember, it’s the fleas and ticks you don’t see causing all the skin and other problems. Once you actually see a flea, they have already been in your house laying thousands of invisible eggs for 6 months.

The danger is that parasite infections can develop from flea and tick bites. Unfortunately, the debilitating effects may not be seen until months and sometimes years later. Diseases such as Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever are a few of the more serious tick-borne diseases that affect both pets and people.

Keeping your pets on preventative medication year round is not only the best way to protect them from parasite infections, it also is the best way to protect your human family members.

The exciting news is that protecting your canine friends just got a whole lot easier with a new, FDA approved chewable tablet made especially for dogs called NexGard.

NexGard is made by Merial, the same makers of HeartGard and Frontline Plus. Those of you using Frontline Plus, Parastar or Vectra probably already know that these topicals don’t enter into your dog’s bloodstream. We feel that a monthly flea and tick preventative is so important that we sell Frontline Plus cheaper than Costco. Please note, Frontline Plus topical is safe and effective only if you don’t wash your dog 2-3 days before and after application.

However, some of you might not enjoy the application process, and your dog might not like it either. Avoidance becomes an issue, and eventually your dog goes unprotected. That’s where NexGard can make a difference.

The beauty of NexGard is that dogs love the soft, beef flavored chew. It kills fleas and ticks for an entire month using a novel ingredient afoxolaner proven to be safe and effective.

We will be happy to discuss with you personally the use of NexGard with your dog. Please call our office with any questions.
