Pond Dye Is Easy To Apply
We have two dye colors blue and black, and you can select between using pond dye granules or our water-soluble bags. Granules can be an easy option for smaller water features, while water-soluble bags are ideal for larger ponds and small lakes. With the bag option, you gently toss the bag into the center of your pond.
If you are using multiple bags of pond dye, we recommend that you distribute these evenly throughout the pond for the best results. With the granules, you will want to add these at various locations around your pond. With both options, applying the dye upwind will help the dye disperse more evenly throughout the pond water.
The most difficult part of the pond dye process is deciding which dye color to select. Our blue pond dye will provide you with a blue ocean appearance, while the black dye will provide you with a lovely reflective surface. Black dyes are typically the choice of golf course superintendents as these tend to look the most natural in a golf course setting.
Most of our customers are surprised to discover how quickly the appearance of the pond transforms after an application of pond dye. It only takes about 24 hours for the dye to spread throughout the pond.
In general, the effects of the pond dye should last about 30 days, but you may need to treat the water more frequently. Rainfall, sunlight and general pond conditions will affect how frequently you will need to reapply the dye. We recommend that you document how much dye you applied and the date on which you applied the dye as this can help you determine the timing and amount of product needed for future applications.

With each treatment we place a either a blue or a red flag on your property. A blue flag indicates a normal treatment and there are no restrictions. A red flag indicates that there are restrictions and these will be listed on the flag. Please give the office a call if you have any questions.
We do not remove anything from the pond. We use aquatic products to treat weeds and algae and once they have died they will eventually fall to the bottom. We then follow up with bacteria based products to help in the break down of the accumulation of this material on the pond floor. You may physically rake out any dead vegetation if you would like.
Our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible with us. If you wish to be there the first visit to meet your technician we definitely welcome that. You do not need to be there every treatment because it is hard to predict the exact time of each and every treatment.
If you are simply looking for a quote, we have the capability to measure your pond via satellite and conduct a quote from the measurement alone. However, if you have more questions and do want an Aquatic Specialist to meet with you we will be happy to set that up for a one time minimal fee. If you choose to sign up for one of our pond service plans the fee will be applied.
Yes. All of the products and treatment protocols we use take into consideration the safety of the wildlife in and around the pond. However, certain fish (koi, goldfish, trout, & some grass carp) can be extremely sensitive to copper sulfate, the standard component used for algae control. If you have these type of fish, please let us know so we can adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
Are My Fish Dead Or Alive? ( After Pond Dye! )
Ponds and dogs – they almost seem synonymous! Our team of Pond Champs loves your canines and we even carry treats for them! While most dogs we meet are friendly, there are circumstances in which a loose canine can hinder or even prevent us from treating your pond.
If your dog runs loose on your property, you must make sure it is not allowed to jump into the pond during treatment or immediately after treatment. This is very important…the products won’t hurt your dog, but they won’t kill any weeds if the water is disturbed after we apply product! The water must be left undisturbed for at least 24 hours in order to kill submerged weeds. This is why we restrict swimming for 24 hours after a weed treatment. This will be indicated by a red flag. Another reason for your furry friend to avoid the pond for a short while is due to our pond dye! Again, nothing here will harm your dog. There have been a number of instances of a dog jumping in and coming out BLUE! If your dog happens to jump in the location where the dye was applied before it has had the chance to spread, it is concentrated in that area enough to do some staining. With it being concentrated dye, most often than not pet owners will have to wait for it to fade on its own.
We are always happy to see a friendly dog on your property, but we will not try to approach an aggressive dog – even if it’s a small dog – in order to treat a pond. If you or your neighbors have an aggressive or nervous dog that goes outside during the day, please let our office know so we can make a plan to keep our technicians safe. The best (and easiest) thing to do is to keep your dog inside on your scheduled treatment day – (if you are unsure of “your day” call and ask us!) That way we can effectively treat your pond and ensure safety of your dog and our technicians.
