At Protection Dogs Worldwide, we are proud to develop close working relationships with our clients, allowing us to work together, and provide the perfect trained family protection dog of any working breed.
A family protection dog is far from the stereotypical guard dog. They are trained to protect their handler and family on command, and within specific threat scenarios. While it must be able to immediately transform from a companion to guardian, it also has to be able to revert to its previous state just as quickly, again on command. Its obedience levels must be immediate, and the dog should be happy to follow commands without aversion or question. We work with the new owners to perfect their dogs’ obedience, as we believe this not only aids a stress free relationship, but also builds a strong bond with the dog. This bond is particularly important in the line of protection work.
Many breeds excel as family protection dogs, but our experience shows that some are better than others.
In our view, the Doberman, German Shepherd Dog, and Cane Corso tend to be the best. Other suitable breeds include the Rottweiler, Belgian Malinois, Giant Schnauzer, Boxer, and Great Dane. However, breed is only a small part of the selection process. A dog’s personal traits are far more important in allowing it to progress through our training programme, and a dog must also be able to fit its family’s lifestyle. It is always advisable to spend time with different breeds of dogs, as well as individual dogs to ensure that the fit is appropriate for all parties.
Protection training utilises a dog’s natural drive, and develops their focus on perpetrators rather than training aids and equipment.
Scenario-based training is essential for the success of your family protection dogs, and we routinely utilise home environments to prove a dog’s behaviour before selling them to clients. If you are interested in obtaining a family protection dogs, though, then this is something Protection Dogs Worldwide would be happy and able to assist you with. We have years of experience in selecting, training, and selling some of the world’s most advanced and capable protection dogs to families, and work with a number of breeds. While all of our dogs share common characteristics such as being protective, friendly, obedient, and intelligent, each breed does have its own quirks. For example, Cane Corsos and Rottweilers mature very slowly and are highly motivated by food, whereas Doberman Pinschers are very playful, and German Shepherd Dogs bond strongly with their families.
A dog’s temperament must match the capabilities of the handler, according to David. “A dog that is a bit softer may take longer to train but it will stay trained for longer. And it is important to consider whether the dog will be kennelled or whether it will live in the house and be the family pet. Dogs that are highly strung all the time need to be trained to switch off.”
“If I were looking for a fully trained peg dog, I would like it to have at least one season under its belt to give the dog the experience and patience to be in the shooting field. A part-trained dog should be a good bit cheaper, but you need to be prepared to put in a great deal of work to finish off its training. There is no guarantee that the dog will meet your expectations, whereas you can see what you’re getting with a fully trained dog.”
Irish terrier breeder Jean Soeters recently sold one for £10,000 and another for £13,500, which went to a Swiss watchmaker. Jean took six months to train the dog to the client’s exact requirements.
Guard dogs and protection dogs are in a different league altogether, according to Matt Wiggins from Staffordshire-based WKD Trained Dogs, which trains, supplies and breeds family and working dogs. “They range from anywhere between £2,000 and £40,000, depending on a client’s requirements,” he said. “We train a lot of dogs to be family pets, and this usually takes us about six weeks. Many of our clients are country people, but not necessarily devoted to fieldsports.” Matt says that he takes on a lot of failed gundog breeds because even if they don’t have the drive to hunt and find game they make the ideal family pet.
Dogs trained for a specific purpose, whether as gundogs or guard dogs, can raise extraordinary prices, Charlotte Lycett Green reports
Is it Safe to Own a Protection Dog?
Owning a trained security dog is generally considered to be very safe. When a guard dog becomes part of your family, your safety and your family’s safety becomes its primary concern.
Some people aren’t comfortable with the idea of having a violent attack dog, which is understandable. However, a family protection dog isn’t the same as an attack dog or a watch dog.
While a guard dog can attack on command, it can also return to a calm and docile state on command. These dogs aren’t inherently violent. Rather, they’re inherently protective. These are loving animals that will make a great addition to any family.
