Training

As an intelligent breed, the Saluki can be trained, but they are also very independent. If they see or hear something that grabs their attention more than your training effort, be prepared for the fact that they will be quite happy to ignore you and walk away. Use positive reinforcement, introduce treats to your training, and try to keep your training regimen fun and entertaining if you want to enjoy the best results. If you’re looking for a breed that does precisely what you say, every time, the Saluki is not an appropriate breed.

Ensure that you provide socialization at a young age. The Saluki can be reserved around strangers, even if they are taught how to behave properly. Without early socialization, they are even less likely to want to be involved with other people.

Appearance

Most people initially select their ideal dog breed based on appearance before thinking about everything else. Appearance is important. You need to know that your dog is the most adorable pooch around.

Although the Greyhound and Saluki do have some similarities, there are some differences too.

  • Both Salukis and Greyhounds have smooth coats which makes them aerodynamic when running. They come in all different colors including fawn, tan, black, white, and grey.
  • Both dogs have long, pointed noses and slim faces. They aren’t the kind of dog where you need to be mindful of drool.
  • Both dogs have long, incredibly thin legs which make them expert runners.
  • Although the colors of the dogs are the same, the Saluki has longer, feathery fur, especially under their belly and on their legs. Because of how fine the fur is, this doesn’t actually keep them any warmer than the incredibly short Greyhound fur. However, it could keep the sun off in really hot weather, helping to avoid sunstroke.
  • Salukis are known to be a little shorter in stature than Greyhounds. They may grow up to 28 inches at the shoulder, whereas a Greyhound can reach 30 inches.
  • Greyhounds are also much heavier than their Persian counterparts. They can weigh up to 100 lbs in adulthood. The Saluki only reaches around 66 lbs.
