Can dogs hike Angels Landing? Here’s the Answer

Where Can I Go With My Dog in Zion?

Campgrounds

Zion has three campgrounds, and these campgrounds do allow dogs. If you want to camp with your dog, please be aware that:

  • Dogs are required to be on a 6-foot leash at all times
  • Dogs cannot make excessive noise
  • You must pick up after your dog
  • Your dog can be left unattended while you’re out exploring the park as long as they are properly secured, the weather/environment is safe (it gets EXTREMELY hot in Zion), and they aren’t barking too loud.
  • Parking Lots and Roads

Your leashed dog can be with you in any of the parking lots in Zion. However, they can’t be left in the car while you hike (it gets SO hot in Zion), and idling and generator use is not permitted in the parking lots. So yes, your dog can come to the parking lot with you, but unless you’re at a viewpoint, there’s not going to be much you can do together.

Zion has a couple of beautiful scenic drives you can enjoy with your dog. I recommend taking a drive along the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway (Highway 9) to the east side of the park, the Kolob Terrace Road (near Virgin, UT), or the Kolob Canyons Road (near Cedar City, UT).

    Picnic Areas

If you want to enjoy a picnic lunch with your dog, you can do so at The Grotto Picnic Area, the Kolob Canyons Viewpoint, or on the grounds of the Zion Lodge.

Pets must be on a 6-foot leash at all times.

    The Pa’rus Trail

The Pa’rus Trail is the only dog-friendly trail in Zion National Park. It’s a paved 3.4-mile roundtrip that travels along the valley floor, providing beautiful views of the Virgin River and the surrounding red rock cliffs.

This trail has little shade and can get hot, so you’ll want to hike during the cooler parts of the day or bring booties to protect your dog’s feet from the hot pavement. Your dog must be leashed at all times.

The Pa’rus Trail starts just across the street from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center.

Always clean up after your dog so that this trail continues to be dog-friendly!

    Trails and Wilderness Areas

Dogs are not allowed on any trails and wilderness areas in Zion National Park except for the Pa’rus Trail. Simply put, if you’re not on the Pa’rus Trail, you cannot take your dog hiking with you in the park.

If you head out of Zion via the East Entrance, you’ll find a bunch of dog-friendly trails near Kanab. I recommend hiking to the Red Hollow Slot Canyon, Squaw Hill, or the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. Be sure to stop by the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary while you’re in the area.

    Public Buildings

Dogs are not allowed in Zion’s visitor centers, the Human History Museum, the Zion Lodge, and any other public buildings in the national park.

    Zion Canyon Shuttle

Dogs cannot ride on Zion’s free park shuttle, even if you carry them or hold them in your lap.

Is Angels Landing dog friendly?Angels Landing is NOT a dog-friendly trail.

  • Rocky Mountain National Park. Your four-legged friends are not allowed to join you on any of this National Parks trails. …
  • Big Bend National Park: Dogs are not allowed on any trails or campgrounds at Big Bend National Park. …
  • Zion National Park.
  • There are many pet-friendly hotels in the Springdale area with dog areas to let them stretch their legs. Most hotels don’t allow dogs to be left alone in the rooms for more than a couple hours at a time, but that’s no problem! There is one trail inside of Zion that is pet friendly, the Pa’rus Trail! While not overly exciting, it travels along the Virgin River and is the perfect spot to walk your pet. It is a paved trail with a few spots of shade cover, has some amazing views, and tons of river access. During the hot months, it’s nice to walk for a few minutes then take the pups down to the river for a nice dip.

Outside of the NP in the town of Springdale, there is a dog-friendly park (not fenced in or anything) but the dogs can play in the grass and still have access to the river. Other amazing trails to do in the Zion area that are pet friendly: Eagle Crags trail (not recommended in the summer months due to the extreme heat, and lack of water) Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, and local trails in St. George!

How to Hike Angels Landing | The Truth Behind “America’s Most Deadly Hike” | Zion National Park

This will be the first time my husband and I will be going to Zion & well be taking our dog with us. We were hoping to be able to go on some hikes with her.

Unfortunately (or, I suppose for some people, fortunately) dogs are not allowed on the trails at all in Zion other than the Parus trail. Youll have to go outside the park boundaries to take your dog on a hike with you, but there isnt much in the way of trails outside the park boundaries. Ive found a few places to let my dog run around Springdale and Rockville, but nothing really in the way of hiking.

There is a trail in Hurricane that would work with a dog – about 30 minutes south of Springdale. I enjoyed this trail, and the views are nice, but it can be windy. http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/trails/hurr-rim.htm

The park is not really pet friendly. As noted the Pa Rus trail is the only trail where dogs are allowed. You could head out to BLM land outside the park and walk along the dirt roads.

If you need dog daycare or boarding check out Doggy Dude Ranch. Its very close to the park in Rockville. http://www.doggyduderanch.com

Wow, thanks for all of these responses & tips! Well probably do the Parus Trail with her & look into the alternative options you guys suggested. Thanks!

I love my dogs and travel with them often. But the answer to your thread title is No, Zion is not a good place for dogs. if you insist on bringing your pet, your enjoyment of the park will be severely impacted in a negative way. I would strongly advise you to leave the dog at home.

FYI, Parus trail is very limited. Its a paved trail about 1 mile long at the bottom of the canyon. You will get to see the river but thats about it.

Also Im not sure if its clear, but with a dog you really wont even get to see Zion at all. Riding the shuttle bus into the canyon is required and I doubt your dog will be allowed on it. Edited: 11 years ago
