Costco Dog Treats Recall 2020

More than 130 types of pet food were voluntarily recalled because they may potentially be contaminated with Salmonella, according to a notice published by the FDA. And not only are pets at risk but also the humans who handle the food.

Midwestern Pet Foods has recalled a variety of cat and dog food brands, including CanineX, Earthborn Holistic, Meridian, Pro Pac, Pro Pac Ultimates, Sportmix, Sportmix Wholesomes, Sportstrail, Unrefined, and Venture. The bags were made in Midwesterns facility in Monmouth, Ill. Sold nationwide, they have a lot code of EXP AUG/02/22/M1L#. The possible contamination was discovered because of a routine sampling program by the company. (Related: The 7 Healthiest Foods to Eat Right Now)6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

In humans, Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, nausea, stomach pain, and vomiting. Strains can also cause infections in the urine, blood, bones, joints, or the nervous system (spinal fluid and brain), and can cause severe disease. Pets with a Salmonella illness can have symptoms such as decreased appetite, diarrhea, fever, tiredness, and vomiting. However, some pets may not have any visible symptoms, so be sure to contact your veterinarian if they came into contact with any of the recalled food.

“Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” the notice says.

To view the full list of products involved, you can visit the FDAs website here. If you do have any of the impacted pet food in your home, you should throw it out now—just make sure its out of the reach of pets and kids. Also, wash your hands and sanitize any pet bowls, storage containers, and other surfaces that may have come into contact with the food.

When checking your pantry, you should also look for a product sold exclusively at Costco— its being recalled because it could contain small pieces of metal.
