Has anyone had any problems with a dog snack called “DreamBones”? I bought them at Martins Grocery Store (a.k.a. Giant). They are supposedly a healthier alternative to rawhide. They are supposed to be 99% digestable, and instead of being made of rawhide, they are made out of plants (mainly kelp), and had a chicken filling.
I gave this to my 3 yr old dog who is strong as an ox, and has never had any medical issues – and within 30 minutes of consuming it, he went into a seizure. It scared the crap out of me, I thought he was dying right in front of me, and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
Then about 10-15 minutes after the seizure, he was back to normal. He went outside and had a normal bowel movement, and dinner later in the evening and had another normal bowel movement, so that told me he didnt have a blockage. I can only assume there was something in the ingredients that he had a severe allergic reaction to.
I checked all the ingredients, and there wasnt anything out of the ordinary that would have been harmful – the ONLY thing I saw that he is not normally accustomed to was kelp and chlorophyl. I looked all over the internet to see if DreamBones had any complaints, recalls or lawsuits, and found nothing.
I know seizures can also be caused by epilepsy, brain tumors, tick bites, and other toxins. I just found it highly coincidental that this happened so quickly after consuming this particular pet snack, which he had never had before. We monitored him closely over the next 24 hrs, and he is totally back to normal, as if nothing ever happened. We threw these snacks away and will never use them again. We will continue to pay careful attention to him, and if it happens again, we will then be faced with taking blood and urine samples to check for other issues. I have seen some reviews giving misleading information about this. SmartBones have always been made in Vietnam. They have never been made in China (where standards are lower) or the USA.

First, I am aware that several dog chews have been recalled over the years for safety concerns. There has never been any SmartBones Recall ever.
One alternative to SmartBones you may have heard of is DreamBones. At the moment they are not available and listed as discontinued by the manufacturer.
They are also Rawhide free. The first nine ingredients in the product are exactly the same, the tenth ingredient is Glycerol monostearate in DreamBones, and 2,3 Dihydroxypropyl Octadecanoate in SmartBones. In fact, the two products are made by the same company.
If you have been using DreamBones, then switching to SmartBones is the obvious move to make now they are discontinued.
The shape of each variety is not just decided upon at random. Each shape is carefully designed to suit the age of the dog catered for and to allow the chews to clean the teeth and exercise the gums. Overall an excellent product.
The product is manufactured to a high standard and the manufacturers have gone to great trouble to provide a wide variety of sizes and varieties to suit every dog. Looking at user reviews of the product, there were very few people who had any criticism of the actual product, the negative reviews were nearly all from people who objected that they were made outside the USA. Since the factory operates on USA standards this seems a rather strange issue to complain of.
A much more serious issue is the number of injuries to dogs that have occurred from Rawhide Chews that get swallowed, causing major surgery on dogs. An issue that SmartBones overcomes.
As a result, what exactly are dream bones?
DreamBone chews are completely free of RAWHIDE and other psychoactive substances. Authentic chicken and veggies are used in the preparation of these dishes. DreamBone chews are very digestible and pleasant as a result of these characteristics. They are also fortified with vitamins and minerals, making them much superior than any rawhide chew in terms of health for dogs.
Is it true that dream bones are manufactured in China
Petmatrix LLC, the firm that manufactures Dreambones and Smartbones, ithe same company that manufactures Smartbones. Some of their items seem to have been produced in China, while others appear to have been created in Vietnamese factories. When it came to chewing gum, I compared the Mini Vegetable and Chicken Chews (made with real sweet potato). Both items, according to their labelling, are manufactured in Vietnam.
