Please email us the dog’s registration number and state what information is incorrect: the spelling of your name, the spelling of the dog’s name, the color of the dog, or the sex of the dog. If the address is incorrect, please indicate the correct address. Once we have received this information, we will send you a corrected registration certificate as well as a corrected pedigree if necessary. All corrections, unless the mistake was on the part of the AKC, will require a $20 correction fee. The name of an AKC registered dog may be changed provided the dog was whelped in the United States. Further, in cases where the litter owner(s) first individually registered the dog, the litter owner(s) written consent shall be required. A dog name containing a Registered Kennel Name cannot be changed without the written consent of the owner(s) of that Registered Kennel Name. However, no change in name will be recorded by the American Kennel Club after the dog has produced or sired an AKC registered litter or has received an award at an AKC-licensed or member event. Any name change must comply with all AKC requirements. You can download a Dog Name Change Authorization application from our Web site. The fee for changing a dogs name is $25.00.

Buyers should not accept a promise that this identification or the registration application will be sent later. It is the buyer’s responsibility to obtain complete identification of the dog as described below. If sufficient information to identify the dog within AKC records is not forthcoming, the buyer should seriously consider not purchasing the dog.

A description of the foreign registration process, along with a listing of acceptable foreign registries, can be found at http://www.akc.org/rules/special_registry_services.cfm. You will need an AKC Foreign Registration Application (ADIMPT). You can download the foreign registration application from our website. You will need to go to the following address – http://www.akc.org/pdfs/masterform.cfm. The application is in .pdf format and requires the use of Adobes Acrobat Reader to view the application. Adobes Acrobat Reader can be obtained free of charge from www.Adobe.com. You must use Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0 or newer to view the files. If you need an application mailed to you, please e-mail your name and your home mailing address (snail mail). The dog must be registered with the name that appears on the foreign Registration Certificate/Certified Pedigree. Foreign titles will not appear on any AKC documentation.

The AKC Board of Directors voted unanimously at its October 2011 meeting to restructure the individual dog registration and co-ownership fees. This new fee structure will allow AKC to continue its good works for all dogs, including canine health research donations, search-and-rescue dog grants, lost dog recovery, kennel inspections, monitoring canine legislation, and promoting responsible dog ownership among other programs. AKC can also continue to provide the same level of quality vital services to clubs, exhibitors and breeders. This is the first registration fee increase since 2007 despite the continuing economic challenges facing the country and as a result the sport of purebred dogs.

You can’t register your dog until its breed receives full AKC recognition, but your dog may be eligible for a listing with the AKC’s Foundation Stock Service (FSS). The FSS provides record keeping services for a number of rare breeds that aren’t currently AKC-registrable. Several FSS breeds are allowed to compete in Agility, Obedience, Tracking, and Rally.
