How do I wash my dogs stuff? Expert Advice

Choosing a Detergent to Help Eliminate Pet Odor in Bedding

Dog blankets and bedding should be washed weekly to help with odor removal. The same goes for your own sheets and blankets if your doggo co-sleeps. Plus, if your pup likes to take a swim or has been out in the rain, your nose knows the telltale “wet dog” smell that can permeate every place your dog has been, especially his bed.

Our ARM & HAMMER™ Plus OxiClean™ Odor Blasters, Fresh Burst laundry detergent is specially formulated to eliminate tough odors like sweat, body odor, and damp or musty smells. Using the power of OxiClean™ stain fighters, and ARM & HAMMER™ freshness, Odor Blasters detergent helps neutralize odors and leaves your pet bedding smelling clean and fresh.

Rather than trying every laundry hack you can find on the Internet, simply reach for the purple-capped bottle of ARM & HAMMER ™ Odor Blasters to help get rid of musty smells from a wet dog and damp bedding.

How to Clean Fabric Dog Collars, Leashes, and Harnesses

Dog collars get the most wear and contact with the dogs skin and should be cleaned regularly. Nylon and fabric collars, harnesses, and leashes can be easily washed.

  • Fill a small bucket or sink with lukewarm to hot water. Add a bit of pet shampoo or hypoallergenic detergent. Place the collar and leash in the solution and allow it to soak for at least 30 minutes. Use a soft brush, like an old toothbrush, to scrub any stains. You may need to use a dab of shampoo on the brush for tough stains.
  • Rinse twice to remove any remaining cleaning solution and allow to air dry. Do not use it until the collar is completely dry.

What type of products do I need to clean a dog bed?

Here’s what you’ll need to keep your dog’s bed clean and smelling fresh:

  • Vacuum. An easy-to-use vacuum cleaner can help keep your dog’s bed clean between washes. It’s also helpful for cleaning off dirt, dander, and hair right before you wash. Portable vacuums or those with detachable tools for easier maneuvering are best for a dog bed with nooks and crannies that are hard to get to.
  • Enzyme cleaner. An enzyme cleaner can help with stains while minimizing odors. We recommend Bodhi Dog Carpet and Stain Remover as our favorite option.
  • Dog-safe detergent. Your dog’s skin can be sensitive to harsh soaps and cleaners just like humans. Generally, anything baby-safe will also be pup-safe. For example, betterpet recommends Rockin Green Cloth Diaper Detergent, a mild detergent made for babies but also a great choice for pups.
  • Optional: Baking soda. If you are handwashing especially stinky beds, baking soda can be a big help. And as a bonus, a lot of people already have this in their kitchens!
  • Optional: Vinegar. When combined with baking soda, it’s a natural (and powerful) odor eliminator. And because it’s an acid, vinegar also helps kill bacteria.
