PARASITES AND WORMS ARE PART OF BREEDING DOGS..
Parasites are a part of breeding dogs so, if you’re breeding dogs, please, educate yourself on the different worms and parasites and put in place a deworming protocal so you’re sending home healthy puppies.
Dog Breeders already get a bad rap as it is and rightfully so in too many cases…but if that’s not who you want to be..then you need to do your part in changing that perception by educating yourselves and be the best you can be by taking the time to do your research on not just medications but genetics, puppy development, the best supplements, dam care, whelping etc.
BREEDERS: Please DO it right or just DON’T do it at all.
Yes, Puppies or adult dogs that have a large number of parasites (high worm burden) may become ill after treatment but it’s usually not from the medication which is actually very safe…its from the worm die off.
If a puppy or adult dog has a lot of worms and they all start to die off at once, then the lining of the intestines can become inflamed which can cause diarrhea, vomiting and lack of appetite. The puppies are usually back to normal within a day or two.
However, seeing dead worms and signs and symptoms.. don’t ever need to happen, if you just start deworming your Dam 10 days before whelping with Safe-guard and then start a consistent deworming protocal with her and her puppies, they’ll never have to experience any of the unpleasant symptoms of a worms infestation and the deworming medication itself will very rarely make them sick.
If you’re not a breeder then it’s still recommended to deworm your adult dog every 3 to 6 months regardless of symptoms.
The life cycle of most intestinal parasites is 3 wks, that’s why it’s recommended to start deworming puppies at 2 wks and every 2 wks after, for the first 2 months of life, the worms won’t have a chance to develop and multiply if you catch the life cycle early in your puppies.
PRO DOG BREEDER TIP: Don’t wait to start deworming your puppies *for the very first time* on the day of or even a week before you plan to send your puppies home with their new family just because you’ve never seen worms before.. you most likely won’t until after you’ve dewormed them and they start to die off.
You should have dewormed your 8 wk old puppies several times before they go home and also recommend that they’re new families deworm them again at 12 wks.
Even though worms are very common and can be pretty harmless and easily treated – it’s still a BIG mistake for a dog breeder to send home a puppy pooping dead worms and believe me, you don’t want to make that embarrassing mistake and luckily for us, it’s super easy not too by simply starting the treatment sooner!
If you just have one or two adult dogs or maybe just one puppy (over 6 wks old) then I recommend you use Safe-Guard granules instead of Pyrantel Pamoate.
Safeguard treats all 4 of the most common intestinal worms found in dogs and it’s also the most effective treatment for Giardia.
Per our vets recommendation, I treat all our dogs as well as our pregnant dogs with “Safe-Guard for Goats” suspension, every 3-6 months and also 10 days before one of our Moms is due to whelp a litter of puppies – as a safety protocol against worms and giardia. I also use Safeguard to treat our puppies at 6 wks and 8 weeks (3 day protocol) so we start a few days before they turn 8 wks which is when most our puppies go home.
You can purchase a box of Safe-guard granules on Amazon or Chewy.com or over the counter at your local pet store.
16 Ounce Bottle of Pyrantel Paomate
FREE TWO DAY SHIPPING WITH AMAZON PRIME
I buy my bottles of Pyrantel Pamoate on Amazon Prime because I get FREE 2 Day Shipping which is also extremely nice when you’re in a time crunch –
It’s the Same Exact Medication.
Just a Different Dosage Chart.
The brands labeled for dogs like Nemex 2 or Durvet 2x or Strong T (4.54 mg per mL) marketed for dogs has a different dosage chart then the one above, the dosage for Nemex 2 is 1 teaspoon or 5 ml’s per 10 lbs of body weight so for a 20 lb. dog you would need to give them 10 mL’s (10 cc’s) or 2 teaspoons.
*1 mL also equals 1 cc or 5 mls is equal to 1 teaspoon.
That’s a lot of medication when the bottles are so small (only 2 ounces per bottle of Nemex 2)…. this can become VERY expensive when you’re deworming multiple dogs or litters of puppies that you’re deworming every 2 weeks. Especially, if you’re using it to deworm your adults as well and you have standard size or 40+ lb dogs!
I recommend using Safe-guard with Adult dogs.

THANK YOU.
Some worms cause more symptoms then others. Here are some of the most common symptoms of worms in dogs and puppies. The goal is too treat for worms before your dog or puppies show any symptoms at all.
Remember, some parasites can™t be seen by the naked eye like giardia and coccidia.
The dead and dying worms pass into the stool after administration of the deworming medication and then you may start to see them dispelled in the dogs feces.
Tapeworm infections are usually diagnosed by finding segments which appear as small white worms that may look like grains of rice or seeds—on the rear end of your dog, in your dog’s feces, or where your dog lives and sleeps.
Can I deworm a puppy naturally at home?
No. You need a vets help in determining whether your puppy does indeed have worms and identifying what kind of parasite they are. Without this information, it is not possible to choose the correct medication to deworm your puppy at home.
Deworming 2 Week Old Puppies…
THIS DOSAGE CHART IS FOR 50 MG/ML PYRANTEL PAMOATE BY COLUMBIA LABORATORIES OR BY ORAL-PRO.
MOST OVER THE COUNTER BRANDS LABELED FOR DOGS (LIKE NEMEX 2 OR DURVET 2) CONTAIN ONLY 4.54 MG OF PYRANTEL PAMOATE PER 1 ML.
I KNOW PEOPLE HAVE BECOME ACCUSTOM TO SKIMMING INFO QUICKLY… PLEASE DON’T SKIM WHEN IT COMES TO MEDICATIONS!
Pyrantel Pamoate Suspension (other common brand names like Strongid® T, Durvet 2x and Nemex 2) is a limited spectrum wormer that removes and controls – Roundworms and Hookworms only.
Current recommendations from the CDC and the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists are to provide deworming medications against roundworms and hookworms at 2 weeks of age, repeating the dewormer every 2 weeks until the pups are 2 months old.
Dose your puppies FOR ONE DAY – ONE DOSE – EVERY 2 WEEKS at 2,4,6,8,12 weeks.
Then treat monthly from 2 months to 6 months of age to eliminate different developing stages of the intestinal parasites lifecycle.
The Columbia Labs bottle has 50 mg or Pyrantel Pamoate per mL and quite simply it’s just a lot MORE COST EFFECTIVE when you’re deworming litters of puppies or multiple dogs instead of buying multiple tiny 2 oz bottles of Nemex 2 or even the monthly treatment packs with 2 chew-able tablets (with 113.5 mg pyrantel pamoate per tablet which equals a total of 227 mg of pyrantel pamoate per pack) that cost you anywhere from $5 to $10 dollars per pack.
The whole 32 oz bottle of Columbia Laboratories Pyrantel Pamoate 50 mg to 1 ml Suspension contains 24,000 mg of pyrantel pamoate, the equivalent of about 105 of those 2 chewable tablet packs.
It would cost you between $525 to $1050 depending on the brand you purchase to get the same amount of pyrantel pamoate with those 2 tablet packs that you can get with a 32 oz bottle of Columbia Laboratories for $20-$30 per bottle.
Or the 2 oz bottles of Nemex 2 or Durvet 2× which both cost between $12-$15 per bottle and with those you have to give your dogs 5 mL’s per 10 lbs of weight so, a 2 ounce bottle is not going to last you long if you’re treating 8-10 puppies several times before they go home!
These are just my own personal opinions but… I can’t help but think it’s a bit of a scam when you know what’s possible and then what’s marketed to us, like what’s the medical purpose of diluting this medication so much?
Becauee regardless, if you’re using the 50 mg per mL or the 4.5 mg per mL the puppy is still going to need the same dosage of the medication its just gonna have to take a LOT more “fluid fillers” with one and a tiny squirt with the other… you need to give a 10 pound puppy 5 mL’s of Nemex 2 and with the Columbia Labs you only give them 1/2 of 1 mL so it’s not rocket science why we use this bottle instead of the one labeled for dogs!
You can deworm a few litters of puppies 3 times over and still use less then 2 ounces of the 50 mg/mL! I’ve never even finished a bottle. I end up throwing it away before I can finish it all because it’s expiring! I had one bottle for like 2 years and several litters and still didnt finish it.
So, if you only breed a couple litters a year, I definitely recommend buying the smaller 16 ounce bottle instead of the 32 ounce bottle.

I only use Pyrantel Pamoate for my puppies at 2 and 4 weeks old.
After that.. I use “Safeguard for Goats” for our puppies starting at 6 wks old and then again at 8, 10, 12 wks old and with all our adults.
I use Safe-guard to deworm my adult dogs every 6 months OR if I have pregnant dogs, then I will deworm my whole pack of dogs including the Mom – 10 days prior to whelping a litter of puppies.
We use Safeguard for Goats (Fenbendazole) at 6 weeks because it kills off all 4 types of intestinal worms including round worm, whipworms, tape worms and hookworms but even more importantly it is the #1 treatment for the most sneaky and opportunistic intestinal parasite.. Giardia.
Most adult dogs will show zero symptoms of Giardia (giardia or giardiasis which is super common in even very healthy dogs) but they may still be able to pass it onto they’re newborn puppies so by treating all our dogs with Safeguard every 3-6 months and 10 days before any of them whelp a litter, I’ve been able to keep Giardia out of our yard and out of our litters for a long time now by attempting to catch it early in our adults and by treating all our puppies regardless of symptoms before they go home.
Giardia while very common in dogs also has very little outward effect on adult dogs but it can still be dangerous in very young puppies or immune suppressed adult dogs.. and at the very least a nightmare to deal with.
Its so common that adult dogs that they’ll usually develop an immunity to it by 6 months old — just like people who live in some countries where they can drink their own contaminated water and NOT get sick because they’ve become basically immune but when Americans travel and drink their water we get EXTREMELY SICK FROM THE PARASITES!
They actually call this “travelers diarrhea“! Same concept in dogs. Adult dogs can gain an immunity to giardia and cocidia. Coccidia supposedly lives dormant in the dogs gut and then outbreaks are usually set off by high levels of stress like a new home, travel, shipping etc which will cause the protozoa to multiple enough to cause actual symptoms.
That’s why sometimes a dog or puppy will show no symptoms of the disease until after they go to a new home and then all of a sudden they have severe diarrhea.
That’s also why it’s so important to treat all new dogs that you bring onto your property, especially if you’re breeding dogs.
I buy my Safeguard labeled for Goats on Amazon Prime because I get FREE 2 Day Shipping and I cannot argue with that.
Using Safe-guard for goats instead of Safeguard labeled for dogs.. is just another economical solution for de-worming multiple dogs and/or litters of puppies while still using the same quality medication for less money, and the only difference AGAIN is.. that you need to use a different dosage chart then is listed on the bottle and we’ve got that dosage chart here too, linked below… Not a hard choice there!
So, in puppies, the greatest concern is infection with roundworms and hookworms because they’re very common and can cause serious illness same with cocidia and giardiasis.
Tapeworms and whipworms, while sometimes found just as frequently or even more often, don™t cause as serious of disease in puppies.
Some intestinal parasites are spread to puppies through their mother’s placenta or through her milk — roundworms are a key example of this. Some are passed to puppies orally via pieces of feces or the spores stuck to her fur and we all know how young puppies whose eyes are not open yet, can end up sucking on places other then moms nipples.
