Has Kirkland Dog Food Ever Been Recalled?

As of 2022, Kirkland Dog Food has only been recalled twice.

The most recent recall took place in 2012. Diamond Pet Foods made a massive voluntary recall of 10 pet food brands due to potential Salmonella infection. It was simply a precautionary measure since none of the recalled foods tested positive for Salmonella.

There were several cat and dog products involved in the recall. To check if the pet food was recalled, take a look at the production codes and best before date:

  • recalled pet food had both a number “3” in the 10th digit and an “X” in the 11th digit.
  • the best before dates were December 9, 2012, through January 31, 2013.
  • Kirkland pet food was also a part of the notorious 2007 melamine pet food recall. The recalled products showed traces of the industrial chemical melamine. When combined with other ingredients commonly found in pet food, melamine can become toxic and cause kidney failure.

“The Great Melamine Recall” affected more than a hundred pet food brands, including Blue Buffalo and Purina. Even though hundreds of pets got sick, it’s impossible to say if any pets got ill from eating Kirkland dog food.

Kirkland is Made by Diamond Pet Foods, Inc.

Diamond Pet Foods is a manufacturer that has been around for quite a long time, so this is hardly a brand-new food. However, for most of Kirkland’s history they were limited to only being distributed within a 100-mile radius of the company’s headquarters in Missouri.

That all changed when they partnered with Costco, and that deal has opened Kirkland (and, by extension, Diamond Pet Foods) up to virtually the entire nation.
