Noise Cancelling Headphones For Dogs

(WWJ) – For millions of dog owners, summer storms and festive fireworks can cause anxiety, wreaking havoc in our homes. But one woman from Michigan has come up with a possible solution to ease these stressful situations for those four-legged family members.

Kirsten Brand spoke with WWJs Sandra McNeill about life with her dog, Emma, who suffers from fear of load noises associated with fireworks and thunder and it inspired her to create her company, Pawnix.

“Back in 2017 my own dog ran away during a Petoskey fireworks celebration,” Brand told McNeill.

According lost Pet Statistics, 14% of the 63 million dog owning households in America will experience their pet running away from home in a 5 year span. Among the top four reasons dog run away from home are fear of loud noises.

It is estimated 5 million dogs are lost every year. Pet Tech also estimates 1.2 million dogs are hit and killed by cars on roadways annually.

Brand said they previously tried to combat their pets fear using a variety a methods, but none were successful.

Brand eventually found Emma and brought her back home, but she knew she, as well as millions of other households, needed a more permanent solution.

“One day, I just decided to put my own noise canceling headphones on her to see if it would work because I hadn’t found any other good solutions and it did,” Brand explained. “I said to myself, I can do this. And if I could make it easier for my own dog, why not make it easier for dogs around the world.”

Brand developed Pawnix, her brand of wireless noise-cancelling noise-canceling headphones specially designed for dogs. She said the material is created from the same foam as headphones human wear at the gun range and offers pet owners an option outside of prescription drugs to manage their dogs stress.

“If you imagine just a large ski mask on their head that kind of looks like a helmet, thats what holds the electronics on their head and also helps to swaddle their entire head a little bit to provide a little more comfort kind of like when youre comforting a baby,” Brand said of the device.

“It takes any loud noise and reduces the volume,” she said. “When dogs wear Pawnix, decibels level of loud noises is reduced up to 30 decibels. That means that loud firework shows become the loudness level of a dyson vacuum, or a running dishwasher.”

Brand explained to McNeill that seamstresses make half of the headset themselves before they are assembled at her home in Grosse Pointe.

In addition to cancelling out noise, the Bluetooth compatible headphones can also playback comforting music. Brand suggestions music with a slow beat or slow tempo help calm dogs.

“Classical music has worked well in studies, as well as slow paced Reggae. We recommend finding music with out a lot of percussion and traditional drum beats,” the company says on their online page.

Pawnix is available for international shipping to the most of the European Union, the UK and Japan.

Colored explosions drip across the night sky. Their reflections dance along water across the bay. The sound from the fireworks reverberates in our ears while our eyes drink in the nights wonder. Then, at ground level, a white streak enters and exits the field of vision in the blink of an eye. It takes us a second to realize, another dog has just ran away due to the loud 4th of July firework show. All of our family members start to yell, “EMMA” the dogs name. Everyones hearts stop, and we all feel weak and helpless. Emma is now another statistic. A run-away. In a panic, we all set off in the direction that Emma ran. After what seemed like hours, we found our furbaby, Emma, down the street. Thankfully, she had been taken into a garage by a neighbor to ride out the rest of the firework show.

The statistics about dogs that run away during the 4th of July are high and very sad. There is a 30% increase of lost pets during the weeks surrounding the 4th of July. According to Lost Pet Statistics, 14% of the 63 million dog owning households in America will run away within a 5 year span. Dogs being scared by loud noises is one of the top four reasons dogs run away. With my invention of a noise-cancelling headset for dogs, we will reduce the number of dogs that run away due to all kinds of loud noises.

Like many dogs, Emma is scared of all kinds of loud noises. Alarms, Motorcycles, Thunderstorms, Fireworks, etc. The Journal Of American Veterinary Medical Association reported 30% of dogs suffer from some type of storm anxiety; and 86% of dogs with thunder phobia develop separation anxiety.

We tried calming oils and treats, doggie shirts, playing soothing music, nothing worked for Emma. One day, while we were traveling for our old corporate research and development job, an idea popped into our founders head. During the planes loading process, the stewardess on the airplane started slamming the overheard baggage compartments to get them to shut over large bags. This happens on most flights, and because it is a loud noise, Emma jumps a little every time it happens. Our founder was wearing her own Noise-Cancelling headphones, so she decided to try to hold the headset to Emmas ears. It was bulky and awkward, but it worked. Emma stopped being jumpy, and settled down and got comfortable for take off. Our founder let Emma laydown in them the rest of the flight. That was the first day of the development process of PAWNIX Noise-Cancelling headsets for dogs. Comfortable headphones for dogs to eliminate these triggers that create all of our drama.

Why You Need to Protect Your Dog From Loud Noise

According to the American Animal Hospital Association, dogs react differently in a loud environment. They show their fear and anxiety in several ways and may even harm themselves in the process and end up having a traumatic experience.

Shivering, trembling, hiding under the couch or bed, barking, trying to break free and running away, etc., are some ways dogs show their noise aversion. Elsevier’s Applied Animal Behavior Science Journal from Oct 2015 comprises a behavior modification plan outlined mentioning that older dogs and female dogs are more affected by loud noises such as fireworks, thunderstorms, gunshots, and even heavy traffic.

If you continue to ignore the signs, your dog might have anxiety attacks and suffer from depression. Since dogs have sensitive ears, some of them are likely to experience sound phobia. In our case, the dog’s sound phobia was so bad that the dog responded fearfully everything he heard a thud or even a click. Using noise canceling headphones or other such things will help your dog stay calm in loud situations, aid in improving their mental health and prevent their ears from hearing damage.

    FAQ

Is it safe for dogs to wear headphones?

Noise canceling headphones are great to protect your pup and dog from loud sound that may not bother an average adult human. They also work well against dog ear infection.

    Do Dog Ear plugs exist?

However, it’s probably not a good idea to put headphones on your dog. Since their hearing is so much more sensitive than ours, you could seriously damage their hearing with or without headphones – making it not encouraged.
