If your dog food of choice is Pedigree, you need to be aware of a recall that may include products youve bought. Cause: Possible foreign material: small metal fragments. Announcements: FDA reports dated Aug. 26, 2014 (archived here) and Aug. 31, 2014 (archived here). What was recalled: The specific Pedigree dog food described below:

  • Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food, 15 lb. bags, UPC #2310010944, Lot #432C1KKM03, best by Aug. 5, 2015, and sold at certain Dollar General stores in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee)
  • Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food, 55 lb. bags, UPC #2310010731, Lot #432C1KKM03, best by Aug. 7, 2015, and sold at certain Sam’s Club stores in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio
  • Cause: Possible choking hazard. Announcement: FDA report dated June 30, 2012 (archived here). What was recalled: The following canned Pedigree dog foods with a Lot Code that begins with 209, 210, 211 or 212 AND a “best by” date that falls between Feb. 24 and March 23, 2014:

  • Pedigree+ Healthy Weight Premium Ground Entrée in Meaty Juices, UPC #2310034974
  • Pedigree Weight Management Meaty Ground Dinner Beef & Liver Dinner in Meaty Juices, UPC #2310001913
  • Pedigree Weight Management Meaty Ground Dinner Chicken & Rice Dinner in Meaty Juices, UPC #2310023045
  • Cause: Potential for salmonella. Announcement: FDA report dated Sep. 12, 2008 (archived here). What was recalled: The following Pedigree dry dog foods with a “PAE” in the 6th, 7th and 8th digits of the Lot Code on the bag, manufactured at Mars Petcare’s Everson, Pennsylvania, facility from Feb. 18 to July 29, 2008:

  • Pedigree Large Breed Adult Nutrition, 20 lb., 30.1 lb., 36.4 lb. and 40 lb. bags
  • Pedigree Small Crunchy Bites Adult Nutrition, 4.4 lb., 8.8 lb., 20 lb., 32 lb., 40 lb., 44 lb. and 52 lb. bags
  • Cause: Potential for salmonella. Announcement: FDA report dated Aug. 8, 2008 (archived here). What was recalled: 20 lb. bags of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites sold in Albertsons stores in Southern California and Las Vegas, Nevada (UPC #2310014719, Lot #830BFCAT02, best by July 2009).

    Cause: Possible metal fragments. Announcement: Newspaper report from Sept. 6, 2007. What was recalled: The recall involved Pedigree brand “chilled dog rolls” manufactured and sold only in New Zealand. No U.S. Pedigree products were part of this recall. The affected products included the following varieties with “best by” dates of Oct. 16–19, 2007:

  • Pedigree beef and liver, lamb and vegetable, beef rice and vegetable, and chicken and rice dog rolls
  • Optimum beef, lamb and vegetable, chicken and rice, and selected meats rolls
  • Cause: Suspected link to cases of kidney failure in dogs. Announcement: Company announcement from March 2004 (archived here) and newspaper reports. What was recalled: The recall involved certain Asian countries, not the United States. The products were made in Taiwan and Thailand and were sold in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea and Vietnam. The affected products included:

  • Pedigree Dry Dog Food, all varieties
  • Pedigree Puppy Dry Dog Food, all varieties
  • Pedigree Puppy Small Breed Dry Dog Food, all varieties
  • Pedigree Dog’s Delight Ringo
  • Pedigree Dog’s Delight Tasty Bone
  • Pedigree Puppy Biscuit Dog Treats
  • Whiskas Dry Cat Food, all varieties
  • Kitekat Dry Cat Food
  • Kal Kan Brekkies Dry Cat Food
  • Cesar Duo
  • Again, no U.S. pet food was affected by this 2004 Pedigree recall, which involved only food sold in the Asian countries noted above.

    Pedigree is an affordable, widely available brand of dog food that almost every pet owner has seen on their local pet store or supermarket shelves.     Mars Petcare US is working with Dollar General to ensure that the recalled products are no longer sold and are removed from inventory.

    Mars Petcare US has made a voluntary recall of 22 bags of Pedigree® Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food products due to the possible presence of a foreign material.

    The bags were produced in one manufacturing facility, and shipped to one retail customer. The facility production line has been shut down until this issue is resolved.

    Recalled Pet Food Only 15-pound bags of Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food sold at Dollar General in Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisiana with the production code shown below are included in this voluntary recall. Each product will have a lot code printed on the back of the bag near the UPC code that reads 432C1KKM03 and a Best Before date of 8/5/15. No other PEDIGREE® products are affected, including any other variety of dry dog food, wet dog food or dog treats.

    Affected bags, which were sold between August 18 and August 25 in 12 Dollar General stores* in Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisiana, may contain small metal fragments, which could have entered the packages during the production process. The foreign material is not embedded in the food itself, but may present a risk of injury if consumed. We encourage consumers who have purchased affected product to discard the food or return it to the retailer for a full refund or exchange. We have not received any reports of injury or illness associated with the affected product. The lot codes indicated below should not be sold or consumed.
