How is Petco helping protect people and pets at grooming salons during COVID-19?

Based on guidance from the CDC and other public health experts, and to help protect the health and safety of our Petco partners, guests and the broader communities we serve, we respectfully require CDC-compliant facial coverings in all Petco stores nationwide. To help our groomers and pet parents maintain a safe distance from each other, weve restructured our Petco grooming schedules. We ask that only the pet receiving services and one pet parent visit our check-in desk – additional family members should remain home to help keep everyone safe. Pet parents are being asked to maintain a safe distance between themselves and others by waiting outside of the salon if another pet is being checked in and, when possible, were scheduling pick-up times to limit the number of pet parents waiting for their newly-groomed dogs. Were also holding 15 to 20-minute windows between each grooming appointment to properly clean and disinfect the work area (counters, stations, and equipment) before welcoming the next pet. Visit petco.com/covid19 to obtain additional up-to-date information on how Petco is helping protect people and pets during COVID-19, as well as helpful resources for pet parents.

How are your care and safety policies developed?

With over 25 years of grooming experience, we continuously review and update our pet grooming policies, procedures and standards under the supervision of our Director of Veterinary Medicine, with counsel from several independent experts in animal care, behavior and ethics. Since 2015, weve worked together with the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) and the Professional Pet Groomers & Stylists Alliance (PPGSA) to encourage and support national health and safety standards for the grooming industry. We believe these standards are critical to the well-being of pets everywhere, and we continue to work with other pet industry leaders to encourage industry-wide adoption and adherence to them.

Wash the dog. Give your dog a bath and let him dry thoroughly before you clip him. Avoid clipping a dirty dog if at all possible. The dirt will clog the clippers and make your job difficult.

We recommend brushing at least 1-3 times a week and bathing at least every 1-2 months. Any grooming should mostly be light trims around the face, ears, paws, and sanitary areas every 4-6 weeks. Typically, wire-haired dogs should not be shaved down as their coat may grow back softer and a different color.

Yes, it will kill most fleas if it is used properly and left on the pet as long as the label directs. It will not repel new fleas from hopping on the pet, however. This is why it is only one step in eradicating fleas, and pet parents should consult their veterinary to put proper prevention in place.

From the Kennel or Groomer Another common culprit is the groomers station, kennel, or doggie daycare your dog visits. Although these kinds of facilities take great care to prevent fleas, infestations happen. It only takes a few rogue fleas to make a pet miserable, because fleas lay 20 to 30 eggs a day.

Their undercoat helps protect them from the elements. By shaving them down you destroy all natural protective properties their coats offer them. You also increase the chances of bug bites, sunburns, and other skin irritations. Removing dead undercoat will help keep them cooler.

Dont Forget the Post-Bath Brushing! Brushing your dog after their bath will help remove any extra dead fur and detangle their coat. As you get more comfortable with blow-drying, you can start brushing while drying to save time — but it does take practice!

No. While canines express needs and wants vocally, there is no scientific evidence proving that dogs, or any other animals, in fact, actually produce tears as a response to what theyre feeling. We seem to be the only species capable of breaking into emotional tears.

The amount of time between nail trims depends on how quickly your dogs nails grow and how quickly they are worn down. The average dog should have his nails clipped every three to four weeks, but it should be done as often as needed to keep the nail from touching the ground when your dog is standing.

All canine companions have two small scent sacs on their bottoms that act as marking glands, which is why dogs smell rear ends when introduced. If these sacs become impacted, it can cause the dog pain, not to mention result in a extremely smelly secretion that remains on the fur.

Commercial Products from Your Veterinarian The most common product used to kill fleas on dogs instantly is Nitenpyram, more commonly known as Capstar. This single-use tablet is administered orally and kills fleas within 30 minutes. It is recommended that you contain your pet in a small area when using Capstar.

Not treating often enough Fleas go through a life cycle of egg, larvae, pupae and adult. Most flea treatments just kill adult fleas, but fleas can continue to emerge for months after you think an infestation has ended. When a newly emerged female flea finds a host, she can lay eggs within one day.

Dogs often get infested with fleas through contact with other animals or contact with fleas in the environment. The strong back legs of this insect enable it to jump from host to host or from the surrounding environment onto the host. (Fleas do not have wings, so they cannot fly.)

Fleas can make their way into the home environment by hitching a ride on peoples clothing, and fleas can be carried in by pets visiting you or on nesting wild animals, such as mice that may have set up camp under your floorboards.

Anyone whos ever had to deal with that hassle can rest easy knowing our Grooming Salons can help. If youve noticed fleas or ticks on your dog, bring them in for a bath or groom and add our Flea & Tick Package that includes: medicated shampoo. anti-itch spray.

Give Them Benadryl Its not meant for heavy daily use, but will greatly help ease your dogs nerves when its time to trim their nails. The Merck Veterinary Manual advises that dogs take 2-4 milligrams of Benadryl per kilogram of their weight. This may mean you break a pill apart into a smaller piece.

Taking your dog for regular walks, including on hard surfaces such as pavements, will help to shorten their claws, but may not be enough to keep them as short as they should be.

A dogs undercoat is exactly as it sounds, its a second coat beneath the outer coat that keeps your dog warm in winter and cool in summer. Breeds that are native to colder areas generally tend to have undercoats and these include the German Shepherd, Pomeranian, Chow, Husky, Malamute and Samoyed.

If they have an undercoat, the top coat may stand away from the body, giving them a slightly puffed appearance. A dog with a medium coat requires regular brushing because the feathering on his legs and tail can become matted when ignored.

A type of coat that consists of two layers, double coated dogs have a dense undercoat of short hairs (woolly in texture) under a top coat of longer hairs called guard hairs. When a dog appears to be fluffier, it means he has a denser undercoat. This means youll be up in for the long haul when it comes to grooming.

Petco is the pet grooming destination for all of your pets needs. Our full-service cat and dog grooming provide premier care for your pet. Our certified groomers are with your dog or cat every step of the way.

If you decide to purchase a purebred dog from a breeder, you can expect to spend $500-2000, give or take. Spend the extra money on a quality dog from a reputable and professional breeder, not a “backyard breeder.” It will cost you less in the long run because the dog will be healthier (and its the right thing to do).

For the most part, cats require nail cutting about every 2-3 weeks. Mature cats usually need more frequent nail clippings than kittens. Make sure you provide a scratching post to support your cats instinctive urge to claw and to keep those nails trimmed between clipping sessions.

The price of getting your dog microchipped through PetSmart costs anywhere from $25 to $50. This depends mainly on location and the types of chips being used.

Petco does offer Express Service for an additional fee of $15 which will shorten the wait time. nails trimmed, you could be out in about 5 minutes, whereas you should expect to wait a couple of hours for a full service on a large dog.

Although no other deaths or injuries have been reported at the Rhode Island Petco store where Ollie died, Petco is no stranger to sudden and accidental deaths at their grooming salons. Last year an otherwise healthy Jack Russell terrier died during a routine nail trim at a California store, and a Golden Retriever died in 2015 after being forgotten in a drying cage at a Virginia location.

“Based on the preliminary autopsy results from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, we can confirm that there was no evidence of trauma to Ollie’s head or neck. As is the case with all Pugs, Ollie had what is called brachycephalic syndrome. The results show that his soft palate was much longer than normal, which causes blockage of the airway and makes it difficult to breathe. As a result of this information, we do not believe the actions of the pet stylist who trimmed Ollie’s nails, nor any other store partners were responsible for his untimely passing. Our thoughts are with Ollie’s family during this difficult time.”

The Rhode Island SPCA agreed that there didn’t appear to be any signs of malice or intent, but will still interview the two Petco grooming technicians present at the time of Ollie’s death, as well as a manager, as part of their investigation.

According to Warzycha, Ollie, a 5-year old Pug, had been coming to the Middletown Petco to be groomed for several years. On Sunday, his owner dropped him off at the grooming center as usual while she went into the store to shop.

His owner asserted, and veterinary records confirmed, that Ollie was apparently healthy and had no known pre-existing medical conditions that might have contributed to his death. A necropsy was performed to determine Ollie’s cause of death.
