What happens if my dog eats Vicks? Expert Advice

What is Vicks Vapor Rub?

Vicks Vapor Rub is an ointment made of camphor, eucalyptus oil, and menthol. It can be sued to relieve nasal & chest congestion caused by colds and flu, as well as ease the congestion caused by sinus infections. Vicks can also be used to relieve minor aches and pains in muscles and joints.

Vicks is sometimes used in other ways, too:

  • Heal feet: Vicks has been used to cure athlete’s foot and other conditions. The ingredients in the ointment have antimicrobial properties.
  • Deter insects: it also seems to be effective against biting insects such as fleas and mosquitos.
  • Alleviate headaches: Vicks is also used to help ease a sinus headache.
  • Helps soothe dry skin: Vicks is also great for soothing very dry skin. The petroleum jelly in the product locks in moisture, and the menthol has antibacterial properties.
  • But what if your dog ingests Vicks Vapor Rub? Will Vicks make your dog sick?

Camphor is commonly found in topical pain or arthritis body rubs. Examples of some common trade names containing camphor include Carmex, Tiger Balm, Vicks VapoRub, Campho-Phenique, etc. Camphor is readily absorbed across the skin, and should never be applied to dogs or cats due to risks for poisoning. Clinical signs of camphor poisoning in pets include local skin irritation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, depression, seizures (in large amounts), and even rarely, death (from respiratory depression or seizures).

If you think your dog or cat were exposed to camphor, call your veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline immediately for treatment advice.

The content of this page is not veterinary advice. A number of factors (amount of substance ingested, size of the animal, allergies, etc.) determine what is toxic to a particular pet. If you think your pet has eaten something potentially toxic, call Pet Poison Helpline or seek immediate veterinary treatment.

Is Vicks safe for dogs to smell?

Vicks vapor rub has a very strong scent. It is made with strong oils and ingredients like camphor to clear any blockades due to cold. This strong smell is not very favorable for dogs.

Though smelling the vapor rub will not seemingly cause any health issues, it might make your dog nauseous and feel sick.

Smelling the vapor rub is not exactly safe for your dog. There might not any serious troubles by just smelling the vapor rub, but it is best to not let your dog smell the ointment. It may lead to nausea or even vomiting. Which is not desirable.
