Is Elmer’s glue toxic to dogs?
Elmer’s glue is PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol) based synthetic glue that mainly contains aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, and propylene glycol. The glue is available in plastic squeeze type bottles equipped with a twist and open dispenser lid. Since, Elmer’s glue is extensively used in schools, homes, small businesses, therefore available everywhere in our surroundings. The glue is environmentally friendly and does not has any animal products and relatively non-toxic to animals. In case if your dog consumed or ingested a small amount of this glue it will most likely give a stomach-ache. However, the toxicity of Elmer’s glue depends upon how much amount your dog consumed. If your dog consumed a high amount of Elmer’s glue it can cause serious damage to your dog. Most of the glue expand and harden once they come in contact with water. This results in an enormous mass of expanded glue that can cause obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract i.e. stomach, esophagus, and intestine. In case, if your dog ate a good amount of Elmer’s glue call your vet immediately for x-rays, or alternatively you can wait for signs of obstructions such as vomiting.
