What kind of clippers can I use on my dog? Essential Tips

*Note: The Andis AGC comes in 2 levels. The black Andis AGC Brushless 2 Speed is a high-rated heavy duty model. It is rated heavy to super duty so can cope with more than a typical heavy duty rated clipper like the Wahl KM2. The pink, green and blue AGC models are different colours in the same model, all called an Andis AGC Super 2 Speed. Those 3 AGC models are full super duty rated models. Just look for the colours, or the word Super in the name.

Welcome to the top. A super duty rated clipper can be used for trimming and full-body clipping, for every age, every breed, and every coat type, for puppies and adult dogs, as well as full-body clipping for horses and cats. Some at this level also come with the newer tech brushless motors. Super duty clippers are rated for thick coats, non-shed, double, wool, fleece, wire, spaniel and mixed texture coats, as well as lighter, thinner, and everything in between! Even badly knotted or matted.

MALTESE > With hair instead of fur, and no undercoat, their extra fine fur can be very prone to knotting. Coat texture can vary within the breed, from wavy, soft and cottony, to a lay-flat, straight, silky, super-fine coat. Some have mixed textures, such as a straighter coat around the head and shoulders, and curlier coat over their back or legs. The coat sits between heavy duty and super duty, so both levels should cope fine, however if the coat is knotted or matted, upgrade to super duty (or remove knots before using a heavy duty rated clipper). Read the Maltese Clippers & Grooming Guide for more detail.

Clippers can be used for clipping the entire body, including all the areas above that you can use a trimmer for. However not all clippers can do all coat types, so always read the clipper or trimmer description to check before you buy. In general, trimmers are cordless, and tend to be smaller, lighter and quieter than clippers. Clippers can be corded or cordless.

Different clipper brands use different terms, but in general there are 4 clipper levels > light use, medium duty, heavy duty and super duty. To choose the right level of clipper for your dog, you need to match them to your dogs coat type and condition, and the areas of the body you want to clip. This guide helps you work out which level of clipper you need.

What is the difference between human hair and dog hair?

Hair and fur are all the same thing, right? If you’ve already got a set of hair clippers at home, it might seem like a perfectly sensible thing to do to use them for your furry friend’s coat, too. But Woodnutt advises against using your own clippers on your dog.

“Dog hair is generally thicker and coarser than human hair,” she explains. In many dogs, an ‘undercoat’ of fur is also present, something we don’t get in humans! This undercoat can pose a real problem for clippers that aren’t designed for the job. “

Some dogs do have coats which are similar to human hair. Known as a single coat, dogs with this type of fur don’t have an undercoat and only have an outer coat, which tends to be fine and not too far removed from human-like hair. Lots of dogs have this type of fur, including Greyhounds, Dalmatians, Poodles, Afghan Hounds and much more – if you’re not sure, try a search online with your specific breed, or ask a vet or a groomer.

Plenty of dogs however have what’s known as a double coat. No human has hair like this, so you’ll definitely need a dedicated set of pet clippers to tackle breeds who have this. A double coat means that the dog has an outer coarse outer coat, and a softer, thicker undercoat as well. Some example of breeds with double coats include the Chow Chow, Pomeranian, Shiba Inu and the Siberian Husky.

Regardless of the type of coat your canine companion has, its going to vary to some degree in thickness and density to human hair and because of that, we recommend you always use a good pair of dog hair clippers when grooming your pup.

This machine right here is a real steal. The Excel 5-speed will plow through any hair that’s otherwise nightmare to cut. Absolutely no compromise and maybeAndis’ most versatile heavy duty clippers for thick fur.

Some people prefer it to the AGC 2-speed due to two things: more speed choices, and the ceramic blade.

Let’s start with the 5-speed motor thing.

2500 to 4500 strokes per minute give you way more control over grooming your hairy pal’s thick coat. You can adjust them according to the area you want to take care of or how anxious the dog you’re cleaning up is.

The 2500 SPM is a big deal for delicate areas, especially for extra matted fur. AGC only goes down to 3300 SPM which can be scary to some pooches and might cause the blades to heat up. Here’s a short video:

Another thing I like more here are the ergonomics and the 12.5oz only weight. You have a soft-grip housing that’s one of the most convenient bodies out of the pro groomer clippers.

Pair it up with how lightweight this thing is, and you’ll skip on wrist fatigue for sure.

As with some of the higher-end Andis clippers, you get a #10 size ceramic blade with the Excel Pro. It stays rather cool, but if you operate at 4500 SPM it will inevitably get a bit warm.

Remember to spray it with a cooling agent while you’re working on that thick undercoat.

My main complaint would be the fact that there’s no case included with the set. You’re paying quite a few bucks, surely that means you’d get somewhere to store this beauty?

I wish Andis would add this little finishing touch to the best dog clippers for matted hair out there.

Also, it costs a bit more than the AGC 2-speed. For standard use, the Excel doesn’t go that much above the AGC – and that’s why you’ll see more AGC 2-speeds in grooming salons for pets.
