With the reigning champion, Claire (Scottish Deerhound) being retired from showing, the trophy is up for grabs on Thursday. Which breed will take home the coveted title of Best in Show?

This years show will introduce three new breeds to the competition: Mudi (Herding Group), Bracco Italiano (Sporting Group) and Russian Toy (Toy Group).

These three breeds will join 185 other breeds as 1500 entries will compete for the grand prize at the end of the day.

Its Thanksgiving Day in the United States and on NBC, that means two big events are slated to take place back to back. Following the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade, The National Dog Show Presented by Purina will be broadcast at noon on NBC and will continue to thrill dog lovers around the country just as it has done since its inception in 2002. The show brings breeds of all kinds to the arena ranging from the tiniest Chihuahuas to the biggest Great Danes competing across seven groups. The winners of each group compete for the title of Best in Show.

“We’re back to life as usual for the dog show world,” Frei, who lives in Seattle, said. This year’s event is expected to feature close to 200 of the breeds and variety of dogs recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Frei said the National Dog Show remains popular because of the fuzzy competitors. “The dogs are the stars,” Frei told The Oregonian. “It’s not John, it’s not me, no matter what we like to think. Who doesn’t smile when they see a dog? The show is all about the great things our dogs bring, the spontaneity and the unconditional love. If you’re watching at home, your dog doesn’t need to be a show dog. It can remind you of all the fun things you can do with your own dog.”

“It’ll look like a regular dog show,” Frei said. “I think that’s part of the recovery from the pandemic, to show people that life goes on.”

(How to watch: The 2022 National Dog Show will air at noon in all time zones on NBC, on Thursday, Nov. 24. You can live stream the program on fubo TV, which offers a free trial. The show will also stream on Peacock.)
