6/10 Courage & His Family Are Living In A Post-Apocalyptic World
Some fans come up with the most creative theories, but one theory stands out because of how much it actually makes sense. One fan shared their view that the setting for the show is actually taking place in a post-apocalyptic future where the world was ravaged after a nuclear fallout.
The monsters and aliens are really mutated creatures that survived, and the UFOs are just sports model hovercrafts for those who survived. Muriel and Eustace are normal human beings because they were protected by a military vault from radiation, and Courage continues to protect them from any threats. Its a little bit of a stretch for the cartoon for sure, but with how outlandish the show is, its not really that far-fetched.
Thanks to a comic book team-up with the Powerpuff Girls, fans get to see a dark fan theory simultaneously be disproven AND proven!
As with most fan theories, its all up to the viewer to decide how valid this one is, but Powerpuff Girls: Super Smash Up! #1 and 2 from Derek Charm, Jeremy Whitley, and Jorge Monlongo seem to both confirm and disprove this theory. First, readers see the Powerpuff Girls respond and react to one of these monsters, confirming that they do exist. However, readers also see Courage hallucinating what the Powerpuff Girls look like. At first glance, he sees them as far creepier and scarier than they actually appear.
This theory suggests that his natural feelings of fear have given birth to monsters based on how he perceives the world. His general lack of understanding when it comes to the world around him, in theory, has led to him exaggerating what everyday people perceive as normal problems. Meanwhile, he views them as catastrophic events. This would explain why Courage characters like Eustace and Muriel rarely – if ever – seem to be afraid of the villains. For example, Freaky Fred may have just been a weird guy made terrifying because of Courages own fear of getting his hair cut.
There is a popular fan theory that suggests that the monsters that exist within Courage the Cowardly Dog may not actually exist. Instead, the in-universe explanation is that all of these monsters are merely fantastical manifestations of Courages own mind. After all, Courage has always been portrayed on the show as being easily scared whether there is a monster present or not.
Whats most interesting, maybe even chilling, is the implication that all the monsters that Courage encounters over the course of the series are scarier than they really are. Audiences will agree that most of Courages monsters are downright horrifying already. Just imagine how scary they might actually be from Courages eyes, or what they may actually look like without Courage the Cowardly Dog intensifying their already intense features.
7/10 The Villains Are Targeting Courage For A Nefarious Scheme
In one of the most elaborate analyses of the series, one fan came to the conclusion that the villains have a greater purpose than simply bringing drama to the series. This fan, who looked in-depth into the entire series, picked up on how different the villains were and how they were all after Courage, some even wanting Courages help in their evil plot. Allegedly, these villains were trying to unleash something within the little pink dog.
The world of Nowhere is full of characters who were pushed by society to become “evil,” and since Courage was abandoned as a baby, he has the potential to become like any of them. The villains see themselves in Courage, and as a result, theyre drawn to him, which is why he deals with so many terrifying encounters.
