Who is Batman’s dog? What to Know

Prior to his escape, Ace the Bat-Hound encounters several different pets whove received enhancements and modifications against their will, like a cognitively enhanced chicken. Not only can it play chess but its legs were cut off and replaced with a wheelchair to test her motor control (along with a voice synthesizer shes yet to use). Theres also a turtle who has no choice but to become quite fast while running on a treadmill with a grinder at the end, a thieving squirrel named Lil Nutz and an abused bear named Ursa who used to be a bouncer at the same club where Batman is now a hostage. Thankfully, Ace frees all of these poorly treated creatures who use their abilities to help him escape, avoiding what would have been a dark future of being incinerated as soon as they lost their usefulness to Schwann.

Now, Ace has his own “League of Super-Pets Dark” to save Batman. They certainly seem to be a formidable collection of animals, escaping the lab and taking out several guards along the way. However, its unlikely that Schwann will just let them go free as hell no doubt try to make them his captives once more to continue his twisted experiments. As a result, it seems as though saving and getting support from Batman will be this new animal teams best chance of securing freedom for good, perhaps finding homes with Bruce Wayne or even with some of his allies.

While Warner Bros. is releasing a DC League of Super-Pets animated film with Supermans dog Krypto assembling a team of heroic animals, theres no way it will be like the team formed by Batmans dog Ace the Bat-Hound in the comics. In the latest issue of DCs anthology series Batman: Urban Legends, the Dark Knight has been taken hostage while his dog Ace is taken to an underground kennel. Filled with animals who have been darkly experimented on, its clear that the team of pets the Bat-Hound has recruited wont be featured in an animated family film anytime soon.

Appearing in Batman: Urban Legends #12, the second chapter of “Hounded” comes from writer Mark Russell and artist Karl Mostert. Having been taken to this secret kennel and lab at the Gotham Pet Cemetery, Ace the Bat-Hound has joined several other discarded pets who are now the experiments of Herbet Schwann, a supposed humanitarian who secretly runs the illicit operations behind the scenes. However, it seems as though Ace is as loyal as ever, determined to save Batman who was taken hostage by Russians following an explosion that separated them in the first chapter.

In the latest issue of Batman: Urban Legends, Ace the Bat-Hound frees a team of unlikely super-pets whove all had it pretty rough in the DC Universe.

This version of Ace was introduced in Batman Annual #1 (by Tom King and David Finch) in 2017. After Batman was attacked by the dog when he was still loyal to Joker, Alfred took in trained Ace until he was the perfect companion for the Caped Crusader. Already, this version of Ace was scarred by the cruel history he had with the Joker. Now, having learned this tragic detail about his name, makes that history all the worse.

Ace the Bat-Hound has been Batmans dog since the fifties. In the decades since, hes accompanied the Dark Knight on many an adventure. Sometimes, the two have been absolutely inseparable. So much so, that the idea of Ace being anything other than Batmans dog seems absolutely ludicrous.

The following contains spoilers for the story “Hounded” Part Five from Batman: Urban Legends #15, on sale now from DC Comics.

This story in Batman: Urban Legends went to the very beginning when Ace was just a pup. He was adopted by someone in witness protection who was soon targeted by the Clown Prince of Crime. However, no kill is ever simple with the Joker. Once he finished with his intended target, he turned to Ace. He left the pups fate up to chance with a card game. The defenseless hound had to beat a king to live and, when an ace was drawn, his name was decided.

However, the Bat-Hound has an entire past beyond the Dark Knight, which was explored in “Hounded” Part Five (by Mark Russell, Karl Mostert, Trish Mulvihill, and Steve Wands) from Batman: Urban Legends #15. During the DC Rebirth era, Ace gained a new origin as an old attack dog of the Jokers. Because of this, a lot of his modern character has been influenced by his time with the Joker, including, as it turns out, his name.

Dog is mans best friend, and Bruce Wayne is no exception. He has had two major dogs living with Wayne Manor, Ace and Titus, though Titus was adopted within the New 52 and he belongs to Damian. Ace has made numerous appearances, but his upcoming one could be his first appearance since the launch of DCs Infinite Frontier era.

DC editor Jessica Chen shared a look at Aces new look on Twitter, revealing that he will appear in Batman: Urban Legends #11 in January 2022. Ace will be part of a story spanning six issues that has the creative team of Mark Russell, Karl Mostert, and Trish Mulvihill. This is a realistic take on Ace, putting him right at Batmans side – even with a sneak peek at a ride in the Batmobile. Chen states that there will be other super pets appearing and that inspiration was taken from The Plague Dogs, which is an animated film from 1982 based on a novel of the same name from 1977. Also of note is Aces latest gear, as he suits up with Batman, detailed on a variant cover by Karl Mostert and Trish Mulvihill.

DC canines have played a big role in comics and animated series, from Ace to Krypto and beyond. With the DC League of Super Pets animated film coming soon, it isnt too surprising that theyd find their way into recent comic titles. There have also been new additions, as Nightwing recently adopted his own canine companion – Haley, also referred to as Bitewing. She is a three-legged puppy who has already found lots of love in DCs fandom, as well as the spotlight on variant covers for the ongoing Nightwing series. In the future, an Ace and Haley team-up could be very intriguing, as these DC heroes spend time with their furry companions who help them tackle their tough nights. Batmans furry friend has been with him for sixty-six years and Ace is showing no signs of slowing. Fans can see Ace the Bat-Hounds newest adventure when Batman: Urban Legends #11 arrives January 11, 2022.

Batmans canine companion Ace the Bat-Hound has been at the caped crusaders side since 1955. Now, hes coming to Batman Urban Legends #11 in early 2022 and hes getting a new, practical uniform.

Batman: Urban Legends #11 will feature Batmans canine companion Ace the Bat-Hound in a new story with a new uniform fit for a working dog like him.

All in all, Ace fits right in with these mistreated animals seeing as how he was saved by Batman from a life of being an attack dog for the Joker himself. As such, Ace is a smart enough Bat-Hound who knew that action needed to be taken to save these animals in a similar predicament. In any case, it should be pretty exciting and comical to see Batmans reaction when hes saved not only by Ace the Bat-Hound, but a whole team of Super-Pets at his side to help save the day.
